View from the Hire Desk: How we keep your project on track

Getting the right machine, to the right place, at the right time. It’s the minimum that any customer expects.
But as everyone in the construction industry knows, the gap between that simple expectation and a successful outcome is filled with unforeseen challenges. A last-minute fleet or site change, a sudden shift in the weather, or a haulier stuck in traffic can trigger a costly domino effect.
Hitting a moving target
These are the circumstances my team, the Hire Desk, operate in. Hire placements are confirmed daily, with each requiring haulage, contract paperwork, invoicing, and in most cases operators - and plans are forever changing. Projects can start and stop at very short notice, and there are so many variables. It’s like hitting a moving target!
Our role is to absorb all that pressure behind the scenes - adjusting haulage, reshuffling schedules and keeping all the paperwork in place to ensure unexpected changes never turn into a problem. We aim to be like swans - making everything look seamless and easy on the surface, while paddling furiously below to ensure everything comes together.
Because we understand that a single delayed machine isn’t just an inconvenience. It’s an operator standing idle, others standing around waiting, and project delays that impact timelines, profitability, and reputation. We know the real-world costs of paperwork and logistical issues, and our entire focus is on preventing them.
Meet the team
I’m incredibly proud of the team we’ve built here. As SER has grown substantially over the past few years, our Hire Desk has expanded alongside it. Each person takes responsibility for a role: allocating operators and managing timesheets, organising transport, aligning with the service team so machines are ready to go, and handling disputes and more.
We work closely with the sales team and are the main point of contact for our customers once a hire is confirmed. I’m proud that we’re an all-female team - not by design, but because we hired the best people for the job. We have many more women in our industry now, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a career in construction to any woman.
More importantly, the Hire Desk is a close-knit team within a family-run business, and I think that makes a real difference. We feel a personal responsibility to deliver the best service for our customers because we are genuinely invested in their success.
Ultimately, when your project is on the line, my team and I are the calm voice on the end of the phone, bringing organisation to the chaos so you don’t have to. Our job is to make sure the machine turns up, so you can focus on yours.
