Being based up here in Scotland, I get asked a fair few questions, but one that comes up a lot is, "Are you a Volvo man or a Cat man?"

My honest answer is always the same: I’m a customer man. My loyalty isn’t to a single brand’s badge; it’s to finding the best possible solution for the project you’ve got in front of you. That’s the simple, common-sense reason we run a multi-brand rental fleet at SER, and from where I’m standing, it gives our customers, three huge, practical advantages.

1. You get the best tool for the job. Full Stop.

Let’s be honest, every equipment manufacturer has its superstars. If you’re in the timber or recycling business, you know that Liebherr makes a phenomenal material handler. If you’re doing serious earthmoving, you know the reputation Caterpillar has for its dozers.

By being brand-agnostic, we curate a premium fleet by hand-picking what we - and you - believe is the best-in-class machine for each job. It means you never have to compromise. You get the right tool, not just the tool that happens to be in our yard.

2. We can actually get you a machine when you need it.

That said, there’s nothing more frustrating than needing a machine for a job that starts next month, only to be told there’s a six-month wait. Because we have strong partnerships with multiple top-tier OEMs, we have more doors to knock on. For example, we have just made an investment in some new Cat 352 excavators as a complement to our Volvo excavators. It gives us a much better chance of finding the right machine and getting it to your site on schedule. At the end of the day, our job is to solve your problems, and that means making sure you get the kit you need, when you need it.

3. You get the best support, right where you are.

And this is the bit people don’t always think about, but it’s absolutely crucial, especially for projects that are more remote. A particular manufacturer might have a fantastic dealer with engineers on your doorstep in the Midlands, but their support might be stretched thin in other parts of the country.

Because we run a mixed rental fleet, we can be smarter about the choice of brand according to the location. We can lean on the equipment manufacturer with the strongest dealer network in whatever region your project is in. For you, that means a faster response, quicker parts delivery, and an engineer on your site sooner if something goes wrong. It’s simple, practical thinking that helps maximise your uptime.

Ultimately, our multi-brand equipment strategy isn’t about us; it’s about you. It’s about our promise of choice, better availability, and faster support, wherever your site may be.
